Email Marketing That Converts: Strategy, Segmentation and Campaigns That Drive Revenue
Email remains one of the highest ROI channels when done right. For small sites the keys are relevant segmentation, clear journeys and measurable offers. This post provides a compact, actionable framework to build campaigns that drive revenue.
1. Define goals and benchmark metrics
Decide whether success is revenue, leads, retention or engagement. Track open rate, click through rate (CTR), conversion rate and revenue per recipient. Benchmarks vary by industry, measure progress against your own baseline.
2. Segment by behaviour, not guesses
Use behavioural segments: new subscribers, recent purchasers, cart abandoners, and lapsed customers. Tailored messaging to each segment outperforms broad blasts. Even two or three segments produce materially better results.
3. Map simple automated journeys
Automations are high impact and low maintenance. Start with:
- Welcome series (3 emails) to set expectations and introduce value.
- Abandoned cart sequence (2–3 emails) with clear incentives.
- Post-purchase follow-up to request reviews and suggest related products.
4. Offer driven copy and clear CTAs
Lead with a single conversion per email. Use concise subject lines that set expectation and a preheader that complements it. Make CTAs prominent and benefit led (e.g., "Get 15% off Apply code").
5. Improve deliverability and list quality
Authenticate your domain (SPF, DKIM, DMARC), remove hard bounces, and re-engage or prune inactive subscribers. Use double optin where appropriate and verify signup sources to keep sender reputation healthy.
6. Test subject lines, send times and offers
Run subject line A/B tests and experiment with send times for your audience. Test one variable at a time and measure impact on open and downstream conversion rates.
7. Measure revenue per email and lifecycle value
Track conversions back to campaigns using UTMs and attribution. Calculate revenue per recipient and LTV uplift from email driven cohorts to prioritise high impact automations.
8. Reuse content across channels
Turn a high performing email into a social post, landing page or blog summary. Consistent messaging improves campaign recall and multiplies the reach of your best content.
